An update from your favorite Work In Progress

Posted on June 27, 2020 by chrystal

I was inspired by my husband to make some much needed updates to this website. I’ve been “re-branding” myself in a way, shedding old layers of me and really focusing on life at home and my mental health.

Yesterday marked 100 days of being home, mostly away from the world. I haven’t been to Chicago since February and the time in between seeing my husband has at times been less than ideal.

My 2020 didn’t start off so good and was quickly exacerbated by COVID-19. It seems like each month is something entirely new and awful. Under what some view as a hard shell is an empath with a constant heaviness and broken heart. Seeing the world on fire has taken a lot out of me. The last time I posted anything on here happened to be the start of a pinnacle time in the United States and has lead to a powerful movement. One I support.

I felt a lot of guilt about writing something not addressing what was happening. Sure, I made my thoughts loud and clear on social media, as I always do. But something about writing some White Savior blog about a topic my privilege has mostly guarded me from felt wrong. Maybe I should’ve used my platform for good. Or maybe I’m just another white girl dissecting a Civil Rights movement that should just be listening to. So instead I put my money where my mouth is by donating and asking others to donate in lieu of celebrating my birthday. I’ve had important conversations and shared insightful articles from someone more knowledgable or eloquent on the subject. Anyone that knows me generally knows where I stand, so it should come as no surprise when I end this paragraph with #BlackLivesMatter.

I don’t really have many personal updates to provide. I’ve been joining a weekly virtual checkin with other women writers and it has been a significant boost. I’ve been more creative with writing prompts and journaling more. I celebrated another year around the sun. I’ve stayed mostly sane and have been working on being an even better version of myself. Finally investing in myself a bit more.

Hopefully it won’t be nearly a month before I write on here again. Be good to each other. <3
