Three years ago I asked Billy to marry me. It was absolutely unconventional and perfect. I was brushing my teeth before walking in on him reading the letter I wrote him. I was unsure of when I wanted to give him the letter but he found it and there was no turning back. He looked up at me and said yes. I remembered the blue ring pop hidden in my closet away from the kid’s reach and presented him with the engagement ring.
Billy told me he had no idea what kind of ring to get me or how to propose. Being the independent woman I am, I offered to propose to him instead. He agreed as long as I popped the question with a blue ring pop. Once I made up my mind I searched a bin full of ring pops at Target to find a blue one. Being a popular and delicious choice, that was not an easy task. I had previously searched in the little league concession stand and a Walgreens while waiting on my prescription to no avail.
I often look back to that moment and how it really sums up our relationship. Something so silly and unpredictable turned into a story I love to share. He texted his parents to share the news and I sat on the bed in disbelief. Happy of course, but wondering if I was dreaming.
We slowly announced the news to our friends and family and were met with confused yet excited faces when asked to see the ring or how Billy proposed. “My ring has been ordered and the ring pop is in a special place. Yes, I asked him.”
Why am I sharing this now? Because since I don’t know what can be celebrated this year, I decided to celebrate this fun anniversary. Asking Billy to marry me was the best decision I’ve made and I’m always happy to share the story.
