Click-bait blogs and three hour drives

Posted on October 22, 2017October 25, 2018 by chrystal

Sometimes I wonder if social media is in my head or if I’m falling into the promoted trap. I can mindlessly scroll through Facebook and see three articles about “signs you’re with your soulmate” or something to the like. Sometimes I take the bait and read the article. Not because I think some promoted blog post is going to tell me if I’m 100% with my soulmate, but because I’m always curious if it’s going to be the same generic list.

Does he make you laugh? Yes.
Do you have the same goals and values? Yeah. Own a bunch of dogs and don’t be a dick to people.
Are you able to disagree respectfully? We’re a house divided because of the MLB. So of course.
Are you attracted to your partner? Wait. Is this a real question? Yes. He’s a babe. Why am I still reading this?

I realize that my list is completely different and I’m 1000% sure I’m with the right person.

Will I still be happy sipping my chai tea and watching him eat his tomato and mozzarella sandwich from Starbucks in 30 years? Absolutely. I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to look at across any table, room, or first thing in the morning and right before I fall asleep.
Do I enjoy even doing the most mundane tasks with him? He is my favorite person to run errands with. Maybe because we’re both eager to get to the toy section at Target, but it’s never dull.
Can I look at a menu and know exactly what he will order? Every single time. No matter what.
Am I willing to drive three hours just to see him and go to a limited time pop-up bar and only spend a whole 17 hours in Chicago? Yes. Always yes.

Last night I left work and drove to Chicago, knowing I had to leave less than 24 hours later to make it back in time for a hockey game. I decided this the day before. Sure, I had other things I wanted to see while I was there, but my reason is always him.

We aren’t perfect and we will always need to work on our relationship. But being with him makes the work seem easy. He is my #1 fan and the sweetest person I’ve ever met. He knows exactly what I need to hear, even if I don’t always want to hear it. He takes care of me when I’m hurting, mentally and/or physically. He gives me all the love in the world. He lets me hog all the blankets and scoot over to the middle of the bed. He’s also silly to me and accepts me for the nerdy true-crime loving weirdo that I am. I can be myself around him and it feels so great.

I can only hope that I give him the same feelings. I know I’m with the right person and I’m glad he agreed to spend the rest of his life with me. To quote the great Ben Folds, “I am, I am, I am, the luckiest.” He’s always worth that three-hour drive and I will always love him more than I could ever find accurate words to say. He’s the cheese to my macaroni. The tomato to my mozzarella. The Homer to my Marge. The only person I want to be on the kiss cam with. I can only picture him rolling his eyes like he does when I sit up in bed reading horrible dad jokes to him while giggling.

I found my person and I don’t need to read another click-bait article to know that.
