Crying during the Super Bowl is becoming a tradition.

No More

Let’s travel back to February of 2008. It was Super Bowl Sunday. I had a few friends over to the apartment I shared with my boyfriend at the time. He got drunk and obnoxious. We got into a argument and my friends decided to leave. I tried to stop it and beg them not to go. I was scared.

He hit me that night. Before then it was a lot of emotional abuse. “You’re so stupid.” Or my favorite: “You’re lucky you have me, no one else would put up with you. You’re not pretty enough.”

I slept in a chair that night and called my friend to help me move the next day. He didn’t go to work the next morning. He stayed home and watched me pack my things. At one point he told me I was stupid for leaving and launched a coffee mug at my face. The rest of that week was spent with him blowing up my phone, trying to convince me to come back. He bought me a ring and proposed a few days after Valentine’s Day.

I’m thankful I woke up. Who knows if I would even be here today if I hadn’t.

I was happy to see the No More commercial during the Super Bowl tonight. I’ve watched my mom go through it, myself go through it, and have lost someone to domestic violence. It’s not a joke. It hits home and I can only hope it helps someone, anyone.
