Thinking back to a conversation with my best friend- “Last night he told me that he loves me.” She looked as if I told her I had cancer. “That was quick.” she said, almost judgingly. I didn’t know how to immediately respond. I softly said “I guess when it’s real there isn’t a time frame to follow.”
Love has always been a sore subject for me. My mom has always been in and out of love. I saw a lot as I child that no one should ever see. I’ve personally been lied to, cheated on, physically and emotionally abused. I stopped believing that romantic love ever existed. It’s easier to mask the pain others have caused and stop believing that my life would ever mimic a fairytale.
But something has changed my viewpoint. Maybe it happened one night, at a time where I should have been sleeping. One of those nights where it’s 1 AM and my brain wouldn’t stop thinking back to all the things that had been said. Maybe it’s that smile. Or maybe there are a million little reasons, some still waiting to be discovered. (I look forward to discovering a million more.)
Maybe I just listen to The Cure more than most 28 year old females, or maybe I’m starting to believe in fairytales again.
